Lined Knit and Crochet Mittens Pattern

Double Layer Mitts
I am going to share with you my secret for making the warmest mittens you or your kids will ever wear. Coming from Canada, staying warm in the winter is sometimes a challenge in the middle of January. I absolutely hate the cold. Yeah, I know, why do I live in Canada? LOL
So I decided a few years ago to come up with a way to keep my hands warm no matter what the temperature. As a result, I came up with the double or fur-lined mitten. This really is easy to do and you would not believe how warm these mitts are! My hands actually sweat in -20C weather with these on.
You can use this technique with both knit or crochet mitts. So I am including a classic knit and crochet pattern below for you to use.
Materials:
1 ball of worsted weight yarn
1 ball of fuzzy yarn such as eyelash yarn or angora
Instructions:
Knit any mitten pattern of your choice. I tend to use the classic mitten pattern but if you like a fancier mitten then you can knit or crochet your favorite pattern.
Important: Make the outer main mittens a little larger than normal as you will be knitting (or crocheting) a second mitt inside.
When your mitten is complete, roll down the cuff and using a fuzzy yarn, pick up and knit the same number of stitches along the first row after your rib stitch. The first row or two may be a bit awkward working around the first mitten but once you get going it becomes easier.
Now you will knit a complete mitten on these stitches. Fasten off and tuck this mitten inside the other mitten. I usually tack the two mittens together by running a stitch through both thicknesses at the tip of the fingers and thumb so that both layers stay together when taking them off.
This double thickness with fuzzy wool used for the inside mitt makes the mittens feel like they are fur lined and the wind just does not get through them. If you are using a natural fuzzy wool, over time the fuzziness turns to felt.If you use eyelash yarn, it stays furry. Both are awesome. Seriously, you will never wear a warmer pair of mittens!
Give it a try and let me know if they aren’t the best mitts you have ever worn.
