i love this, and its similar to the the stich that ive been using to learn, but it has a ribbed effect to it, how do i get it to look smoother and more airy?

That scarf is straight stockinette stitch: knit one row, purl one row.

But if you want something just a little nicer try this pattern, I did it in Mohair, size 11 needles and get raves all the time. Make it narrow by only casting on 21 stitches and it goes by really fast and you can get by with only 1 skein.

Use a big needle size and thin yarn.
Make a small square trying different needles and yarn to see which one you prefer.
Mohair yarn would work with large needles.

Using larger needles and a DK weight or thinner mohair yarn, knit the fabric in stockinette stitch (knit row 1 and all odd-numbered rows, purl row 2 and all even-numbered rows).

Other ways you can get the airy look: Every so often–every 5th row or 9th row, for example, loop the yarn over the needle *between* the stitches. On the next row, drop the yarn-over loops and don’t knit them. Doing that provides a row with longer stitches.

Use a thin fuzzy yarn, and large needles. Here’s another picture of an airy scarf still on the needle: http://media.photobucket.com/image/airy+scarf/JenInSF/IMG_0933nb.jpg?o=2

If you knit one row then purl one row, you will get a smoother fabric, but it will have a definite right and wrong side. To get reversible fabric, knit all rows. It will have more of a vertical striped texture to it.

Try a knit 2 sts purl 2 sts with an odd number of stitches. This will give you a pattern on both sides and your item won’t curl in at the sides.
