Is crochet difficult? I already know how to knit, but would like to learn to crochet.?

Is there any similarities between the two?
Which do you prefer?
Thank you :)

If you can knit continental style, then crochet is very similar. Some like it, some don’t. But it’s a good thing to know, since some knitting needs a crochet edge to finish.

Crochet yarn is usually a tighter twist. Some softly spun yarns look great knit, but have no definition for crochet. The twist on crochet yarns is usually the opposite direction than knitting yarns. You may find that your knitting yarn may split easily when doing crochet. Not a problem — just let the ball spin to wind it up again — but is annoying.

Otherwise, working with any yarn (but not acrylics) is good!

I am trying to learn how to crochet but I have no clue how to do it with paper instructions?

a little help please?

Hi!

It’s great that you’re trying to learn to crochet! It is a great way to stop boredom, and make gifts that are really valuable and practical.

My number one suggestion is trying this out:

http://www.youtube.com/user/tjw1963

She makes video tutorials, with videos on basic stitches, patterns, and lingo.

Another thing would be to look for a local yarn store. Many, like Jo Ann Fabrics, offer classes. You can locate stores here: http://www.joann.com/joann/index.jsp?_requestid=1015895

Finally, try asking someone who knows how to crochet to show you, like maybe a grandparent. This would be a fun way to bond with that person, and they would be able to help you with any of your problems.

Good luck, and happy crocheting!

Help me learn to crochet?

I want to learn to crochet my own skull caps, any advice on how to get started?

Go to stores like Michaels or Johanns and get a crochet CD I think it’s called, Crochet made easy, it’s a CD that tells you different crochet stitches and how to start, it’s defintely for beginners. Then get like a crochet packet for example they sell packets that have one crochet needle, yarn, and a simple stich guide for beginners to make a like a scarf. The packet gave me the tools necessary to make a scarf, those things are for beginners. Learn how to make scarfs first then you can get the hang of how to stich with the crochet needle. This is what I did and now I’m making hats. And the cool thing about crocheting is that once you get how to do a stich everything because easy, I catched on in about 3 days!!

What’s the best book or dvd to learn how to crochet a pair of gloves?

The Caroll Duvall Show and Knitty Gritty are great places for video starts on mittens and gloves. check out the hgtv website or try About.com and type in crochet there are a ton of patterns there that are simple beginner type.

I want to learn how to crochet?

I don’t know anyone who can teach me how to crochet. I really want to learn. I want to make some cute hats for my daughter. Is it easy? Can I teach myself? What are the basics? What do I need? Thanks!!

The basics for crochet are hooks (make sure you have the right size), yarn, and a yarn needle to weave the ends in when you are done. It’s important to make sure you have enough yarn too. (Most hats wouldn’t require a lot of yarn, but if you decide to make an afghan later, those require several skeins.) When I learned to crochet, I learned with a bigger hook so I could see my stitches easier.

Crochet is very easy. You can teach yourself. I learned to crochet about 18 months ago, but I had wanted to learn for years. I only ever had one person try and teach me, and at the time, I just wasn’t getting it. So I got a knitting DVD from the library and it had crochet instructions on it! It was the best resource I could have asked for and I haven’t put down a hook since. Soooo, if you are like me, you have to actually see it done to know how they do it. For this I recommend you watch some videos on the internet. Here are some links:
YouTube is probably the best resource for a beginner. Here are some of the videos that are available. There are many more available if you just do a search for what you need.

This covers all the basics, but the videos aren’t very long.

Refer to this one if you need help with more complex stitches. http://www.freepatterns.com/content/content.html?cat_id=2&type_id=S

These sites have some great tutorials, but there are no videos:

I don’t know how old your daughter is, but here are some links that should have patterns for hats:
http://www.crochetcabana.com/patterns.htm (Scroll down to where it says "hats". There are only five patterns.)
http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php There is a section for hats, but you also might have to look under Baby crochet or in other areas to find more. You can also do a search on the site for hats.

Here are some YouTube videos on making hats. I haven’t watched them, so I don’t know how good they are, but you might find them helpful.

~Happy Crocheting!~

tryn to learn crochet can someone tell me in plain terms what this means; [3dc. (Ch2. 4dc) 3 times] in ring.?

I know how to create the chain and the ring and I know how to single and double crochet – just don’t understand how to read the pattern.

Thanks

I think that you had instructions to begin with chain x amount of stitches and form a ring. You did this and then it told you to crochet 3 stitches. That 3 stitches at the beginning of each row represents a double chain. So when you get to the end of that row you will slip into the top of the ch 3 and that will make up the other part of the ch3 so you will have the equivalent of 4dc all around the ring.
